Wendover History: The first documented mention of Wendover was in the last will and testament of the Aeldorman of Wiltshire and Hampshire in 970. Just over a century later it was listed in the Domesday Book as Wendovre. From its early days Wendover was a market town (just a village in its early days) and markets have been held there since the times of King John in 1199, its main industries were agriculture, straw plaiting and lace making. Wendover officially became a town in 1464 when it received its Royal Charter.
The English chronicler Roger de Wendover (Roger of Wendover) lived in the town in the 12th century, he later became a monk at St Albans Abbey where he died in 1236.
Wendover has sent members to Parliament from as early as 1300, though this priviledge was later removed and only restored in 1623 after a long pause. Local hero John Hampden represented the borough in 5 parliaments.
The first record of the manor of Wendover changing hands was in the reign of Henry II (1154–1189), when he offered it to Faramus de Boulogne. Later Lords of the Manor include: Sir John Molins 1341, Alice Perrers, Thomas Holland, Earl of Kent (1380), Edward Duke of York (1388), Sir Francis Knollys (1564 after being held by the crown for many years), in 1660 it was bought by the Hampden family.
The parish church (St Mary the Virgin) dates from the 12th century though the current building is from the 14th century, It comprises a tower, chancel, nave, north and south aisles, north and south porches and chancel aisles, it was restored twice during the 19th century and again in 1914.
A row of cottages on the Tring Road once belonged to Henry VIII's wife Anne Boleyn and are still known locally as "Anne Boleyn's Cottages".
Its position on a main route to London led to the town having a large number of inns in comparison to its size, it had 9 as early as 1577. One of the oldest existing public houses is the Red Lion in the town centre it dates from at least 1670, though probably existed much earlier.
The distinctive clock tower in the centre of Wendover was built in 1842, it acted as a market hall and gaol, these days it acts as the Tourist Information Centre.
Modern day Wendover is a popular commuter town having good rail and road links with central London.
Wendover's Name: The name is though to derive from the Celtic for "white waters", referring to a stream which runs through the town, rising in the nearby Chiltern Hills.
